Redfish Lodge on Copano Bay

Fishing At The Redfish Lodge

We Are Luxetta

Texas' Premier Fishing Paradise

Rockport and Fulton are located on the Live Oak Peninsula in Aransas County, Texas. This is the dead center of the area known as the “coastal bend.” Our bays are separated from the Gulf of Mexico by barrier islands, Matagorda to the north, San Jose in the center, and Mustang to the south. Here, the vast shallow grass flats of the Laguna Madre to the south collide with the deeper, oyster-laden bays of the northern Texas coast. This diversity of water and structure makes Aransas County an ideal ecosystem for a huge variety of fish including inshore target species like spotted seatrout, redfish (red drum), black drum, and flounder. This rich estuary is blessed with freshwater rivers including the Nueces, Aransas, Mission, and Guadalupe that create the ideal salinity for shrimp, crab, and baitfish to flourish. This abundance of food keeps the fish local and grows them big and plentiful.

At Redfish Lodge, we offer more than just bay fishing. Our guides can take your group fly fishing or wade fishing along the flats, or if you’re looking for something truly memorable, try flounder gigging — a nighttime adventure that’s unlike anything else on the water. Whatever your group’s preference, we have an option that fits. Simply let us know what type of fishing experience you’re after when you fill out your inquiry, and we’ll take care of the rest.

In the center of the coastal bend is the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, a vast natural area that spreads from Lamar to Tivoli, set aside for the majestic whooping cranes. This beautiful and bountiful refuge provides the backdrop for most of the fishing adventures, as well as some of the most amazing birding in North America. From November to April, the whooping cranes can be seen daily during their forages for crabs, snails, and other aquatic delicacies.

Where You Fish

Redfish Lodge is located on Copano Bay, which is just one of the many bays in the coastal bend. From San Antonio Bay to the north to Corpus Christi and Nueces to the south, there are approximately a dozen bays to explore in this area. These bays receive their fresh gulf water, with all its richness, from both the Port Aransas Channel and Cedar Bayou. This ensures cool oxygenated water year-round, helping to create and maintain this unique and amazing habitat. The water here has an emerald green tint, often referred to as “trout green” water. This makes for wonderful sight-fishing opportunities in our shallow flats, lakes, and bayous. The deeper bays, with their prolific oyster reefs, provide food for gamefish and safety and comfort from extreme hot and cold water.

From sight fishing the shallows to jigging the dropoffs of the ship channel, presenting flies or dropping cut mullet on the bottom, there is an endless variety of fishing styles bend rods in the coastal bend. A very popular way to fish here is wading with lures. Throwing topwaters or soft plastics on the many sand bars, flats, and reefs of the area is a great way to bend a rod on trout and reds. If staying in the boat is more your style, freelining croaker or fishing live shrimp under popping corks will provide some amazing action. From beginners out on their first fishing trip to seasoned pros, the coastal bend has everyone covered.
